Guatemaya’s Doctor Nativo is one of Central America’s most exciting new talents. His music layers Mayan spirituality, social activism, and folk wisdom over a propulsive sound combining reggae, cumbia, hip hop, and pre-Columbian instruments. His debut album, Guatemaya is a call for social justice for his country’s indigenous majority. It came out on Guatemalan Independence Day: September, 15 2018, on Stonetree Records.
At a young age, Nativo left the traditional educational school system and dedicated his life to music. After busking his way through Europe, India, and Latin America, life brought him to Cuba (the country of his father’s birth), to study at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana. Eventually, he settled in Barcelona where he continued to master his art through direct contact with the people.
His second studio album, La Kocina, is a powerful alliance of cultures combining his own unique mixture of traditional rhythms and contemporary sounds with the spicy richness of the beautiful neighboring land of Mexico. Featuring Mariachis, Jaranas, Requintos, and a wide range of spectacular new and legendary artists, this album includes anthems such as Caminantes feat. Roco Pachukote from La Maldita Vecindad, Chokolate Cacao feat. Mayan rapper Salvador Chavajay, and Minorias feat. La Primavera among others.
Doctor Nativo is on a mission to elevate consciousness through music and dance, a party with a purpose, alongside his extraordinary backing band, showcasing talented female musicians including Nay Roze (violin), Jennie Delgado (cajon), Alexis Martinez (guiro), his cousin, Lenny Lombardo, (bass), and special guest, his sister, Adriana Martinez (marimba). La Kocina del Doctor Nativo, set for release in 2022, is highly anticipated by fans and music lovers worldwide!
